George Sandys (trans.) Ovids Metamorphosis Englished Andrew Hebb, London, 1638, 14.5 x 9cm, contemp. leather, worn; title page dust-affected, browning to index and colophon; [4], 316,[10]pp. Written in Virginia, America, 1626, Sandys' translation of the Metamorphosis is the first major poetic work composed in the American colonies. Sandys became Treasurer of the Virginia Company in 1621. Before leaving England, he had started the translation, but it was in Virginia that he finally finished it in 1626, dedicating it to Charles I.
